Beautiful Carton Art:

Ana Serrano is a first generation Mexican American born in Los Angeles, California in 1983. Inspired by both of the cultural contexts in her life, she creates work utilizing a variety of mediums including drawing, collage, sculpture, and motion. Her work bears reference to those in low socioeconomic positions, with particular interest in the customs and beliefs, as well as the architecture, fashion, and informal economies present within this segment of society. A current theme explored in her work is the socio-cultural aspects of drug trafficking, and the branding and acceptance of the drug lord lifestyle. She is a recent graduate of Art Center College of Design and currently resides in Los Angeles, California.

Kitchen Garden - Salada em tapete

I had a tray filled with sprouts of a large variety of salad vegetables, mainly leafy ones. To separate each shoot would take several hours and many shoots would be lost, so I’ve decided to test growing them in mat. I knew I’ve seen it before, but couldn’t recall where, so I just took the tray, separated large chunks, and planted them in rows directly in the ground.

The result will be, that the plants will grow and will stifle each other, because of the density. This would be a problem if I was expecting to harvest one by one, one lettuce, one chicory… like this all I have to do is to wait they grow enough so that I can trim the leaves for a salad, with the advantage that I leave the stalk undamaged. Many of the leafy greens after being trimmed will grow back again, as long as the stalk is left in the soil.

Basil seldom survives autumn and winter if left in the garden, however if it is placed indoors it may last a long time. In order to get fresh herbs the whole year, you should collect the basil seeds in the garden and sow them in the late summer in nursery containers. In this photo you can see this years’ nursery containers with baby basil shoots. Today I’ve placed them in bigger pots. Tomorrow is tarragon and thyme day.

PACKAGING FOR FOOD

You do not see, does not smell, but you can eat. The University of Minho is proposing a revolution in the food industry: a film that allows packaging food, increasing theirshelf life, but that is so thin it’s invisible. It can eat up, because its base is a material that is 100 percent safe for human consumption.

Foods are covered with a liquid solution containing a nanoparticle that, when dry, will create a protective film. This material prevents the microorganisms from contaminating the fruit or vegetable, solving problems of food security. “In practice, this is a barrier,”said Teixeira, a researcher at the University of Minho (UM) which coordinates the team of five people who developed this innovation.
